Judicial Watch, the conservative watchdog that is pursuing information about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email, is calling for an investigation into a meeting between former President Bill Clinton and Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
The group said on Thursday that it had sent a request to the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General to launch an “immediate and thorough investigation” into Bill Clinton’s meeting with Lynch inside a private plane parked at a Phoenix airport.
“Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s meeting with Bill Clinton severely undermined the already low public confidence in her agency’s criminal investigation of Hillary Clinton,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “In addition to this IG investigation, Judicial Watch has already sent Freedom of Information Act requests about this scandalous meeting.”
Judicial Watch, in its letter to the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General, cites official regulations that require Department of Justice employees to “avoid any actions” that create the appearance that they are violating either the law or ethical standards.
“Lynch’s meeting with President Clinton creates the appearance of a violation of law, ethical standards and good judgment,” the group said. “Lynch’s decision to breach the well-defined ethical standards of the Department of Justice and the American legal profession is an outrageous abuse of the public’s trust. Her conduct and statements undermine confidence in her ability to objectively investigate and prosecute possible violations of law associated with President Clinton and Secretary Clinton.”
Lynch confirmed on Wednesday that she had met with Bill Clinton inside a parked, private jet at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, but she insisted that the two only discussed private matters during their 30-minute meeting. “Our conversation was a great deal about his grandchildren,” she said.
News of the private meeting caused controversy as the Federal Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s handling of sensitive information during her tenure as secretary of state. There have also been claims about a possible investigation regarding donations to the Clinton Foundation.
