Lumia smartphone owners stuck on Windows Phone 8.1 have been waiting a long time for Windows 10 Mobile, which was supposed to be released before Christmas before being delayed to early 2016.

There is no official release date as yet, but Tweets from the @LumiaHelp Twitter feed say it’s on the way “soon”. How soon is that? Anonymous tipsters have claimed 12th January is the date set for rollout.

Currently, the mobile operating system is only available for Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL devices. Several bugs and issues have been reported related to software updates, which may be the reason Microsoft is not yet allowing other Lumia users download it.

The 12th of January launch may not be accurate, but it does appear in line with official comments from the Redmond-based software giant. One of the changes includes the new Edge browser, an app that has been available in the desktop version of Windows 10 for some time.

Apparently, you will need any of the following handsets to qualify for the Windows 10 Mobile download: Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, or Lumia 930. The OS also requires 8 GB of free memory for installation. Those requirements could of course change between now and when Windows 10 Mobile is launched, which hopefully won’t be too far off…
