A tourist boat carrying more than 30 people has capsized and sunk on Table Rock Lake in southwest Missouri, killing at least 8 people, local officials say. Divers are searching the water for an unknown number of people who are still missing.

The accident happened at about 7:10 p.m. CT on Thursday when a severe thunderstorm hit the area near Branson. An amphibious vehicle operated by “Ride the Ducks” capsized and sank while it was carrying at least 31 people, including children.

Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader said at least 8 people were confirmed to have died and 7 others, including children, have been taken to hospital. Divers continue to search the water for an unknown number of people who are believed to be missing.

There was no immediate word on the identities of the victims.

“We are aware of a major incident that happened tonight on Table Rock Lake, and ask that you pray for those involved as well as law enforcement/first responders,” the lake’s visitors bureau said in a brief statement.

The ‘Ride the Duck’ boats are amphibious vehicles, taking tourists on a tour of the Branson area and onto Table Rock Lake for about 20 minutes. Similar tours take place in a number of states.
