Afeni Shakur, the mother of the late Tupac Shakur, who was one of the most successful rappers of all time, has died in California, officials say. She was 69 years old.
Shakur was taken to hospital after deputies responded to a possible cardiac arrest at her home in Sausalito, which is a city about 6 miles northwest of San Francisco. She was pronounced dead at 10:28 p.m. PT on Monday.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Coroner Division will investigate the exact cause and manner of Shakur’s death, said Marin County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Doug Pittman, who provided no further details.
Afeni Shakur founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF) in 1997 to bring quality arts training to young people after her son’s death in September 1996.
