President Donald Trump on Wednesday commuted the sentence of Alice Johnson, who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, nonviolent drug offense, according to the Associated Press.
The decision comes less than a week after a meeting at the White House between Trump and Kim Kardashian, who had asked the president for a pardon. She had been in contact with the White House for several months to raise the woman’s case.
Johnson, who is 63 years old and has been in prison for more than 20 years, is expected to be released as soon as the presidential commutation has been processed. Responding to the news, Kim said in a tweet: “Best news ever!”
