Syrian rebels have shot down a fighter jet belonging to government forces south of the city of Aleppo. The pilot is believed to have been captured by the al-Qaeda affiliated group Al Nusra.

Photos and video distributed by pro-rebel media outlets in Syria showed a burning aircraft going down in and crashing in southern Aleppo province. State-run media reported that the aircraft had been shot down with a surface-to-air missile.

The aircraft that was shot down is believed to have been a MiG-27 aircraft, which is capable of carrying only one person. Reports from the area indicated that the pilot safely ejected before he was captured by Al Nusra Front militants. His current condition is unknown.

State-run media reported that the aircraft was targeted while carrying out a reconnaissance mission.
