North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered the country’s military forces to ensure that its nuclear weapons are ready for use at a moment’s notice, state-run media reports.
Kim, who said the situation on the Korean Peninsula had become ‘very precarious,’ made the announcement while overseeing a military drill in the country. The comments were reported by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on early Friday morning.
The 33-year-old communist leader said the country’s nuclear weapons should be ready for use at a moment’s notice, and added that the military’s posture would be changed so it is able to carry out pre-emptive attacks in the face of foreign threats, the Yonhap news agency reported.
Other details were not immediately available, but the report comes just a day after the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution that imposed new sanctions on North Korea over its recent nuclear test and long-range missile launch. In an apparent response, North Korea launched several short-range missiles just hours later.
