U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, who had insisted he would not seek political office after his unsuccessful bid for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, announced Wednesday that he will run for re-election in the Senate.
“In politics, admitting you’ve changed your mind is not something most people like to do. But here it goes: I have decided to seek reelection to the United States Senate,” Rubio said, less than a month after insisting he would be a private citizen in January.
Rubio said in his statement that Republican control of the Senate could come down to the race in Florida, and highlighted the Senate’s power to act as a check and balance on “the excesses” of a president. “No matter who is elected president, there is reason for worry,” he said.
Rubio was an outspoken critic of Donald Trump during his presidential campaign and raised eyebrows in May when he said he would be willing to help Trump in defeating Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. In Wednesday’s statement, Rubio again spoke out against Trump.
