A 20-year-old man has been arrested over an alleged plot to carry out a terrorist attack on New Year’s Eve in the Australian city of Melbourne, local police say. Only few details were immediately released.

The man, who was not immediately named by police, was arrested just before 3 p.m. on Monday in the Melbourne suburb of Werribee. Search warrants were executed at properties in Werribee, Meadow Heights, and Footscray.

“It will be alleged the man arrested was involved in undertaking preparations for planning a terrorist act in Melbourne on New Year’s Eve this year,” Victoria Police said in a statement. “He is currently being interviewed in relation to the offences of Acts in Preparation to Commit a Terrorist Attack and Collecting Documents to Facilitate a Terrorist Act.”

Specific details about the alleged plot were not immediately released by authorities, but no additional arrests are expected, according to Victoria Police. There was no immediate word on whether the man was working with or on behalf of a terrorist group.

“Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police would like to reassure the community that the threat has been contained and there is no on-going risk posed by this individual,” police said in the statement. “The community should continue to go about their daily business and report any suspicious activity.”
