Knife-wielding man attacks people at mall in southeast Poland

A knife-wielding man has attacked people at the VIVO! mall in the city of Stalowa Wola in southeast Poland, killing at least one person and injuring eight others, local officials say. The suspect was taken into custody.

The incident happened at about 3 p.m local time on Friday when a man who was armed with a knife began attacking customers at the VIVO! mall in Stalowa Wola, a city about 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of the capital Warsaw.

Police said that 9 people were injured, including a 50-year-old woman who succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to an area hospital. Several other victims were also reported to have suffered serious injuries.

The suspect, who was identified by Polish media as a 27-year-old local resident, appeared to have attacked people at random. Several people tried to stop the man and he was taken into custody at the scene.

The motive for the attack was not immediately known.
