Three American citizens were kidnapped in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Sunday and an operation has been launched by local security forces to find them, reports say.
An Iraqi police colonel, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the AFP news agency that three Americans and an Iraqi translator were kidnapped in southern Baghdad by militiamen wearing military uniforms. The motive for the reported kidnapping was not immediately known.
U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby confirmed that several American citizens had been reported missing in Iraq, but provided no specific details. “We are working with the full cooperation of the Iraqi authorities to locate and recover the individuals,” Kirby said.
