An armed person has opened fire at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ near the city of Nashville in Tennessee, injuring at least seven people, local authorities say. The suspect was also shot before being taken into custody.
The incident began just before 11:15 a.m. CT on Sunday when officers were called to reports of shots being fired at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, but specific details about the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available.
Antioch is located in Davidson County, about 9.5 miles (15 kilometers) southeast of Nashville.
A spokesman for the Nashville Fire Department said medics were treating at least 8 gunshot victims, including the suspected shooter. All of the victims are believed to have been attending a weekly service at the church.
“This is a mass casualty situation. All of the wounded have been transported to area hospitals,” the Nashville Fire Department said on its official Twitter account. It provided no information about the severity of their injuries but added that all of the victims – except one – are over the age of 60.
Other details – such as the identity of the suspect or his or her possible motives – were not immediately available. A large number of emergency services responded to the scene of the shooting, a witness said.
