U.S. Congressman Paul Ryan has formally declared his candidacy for Speaker of the House of Representatives after receiving overwhelming support from within the Republican Party.
Ryan, a Republican from Wisconsin, announced his decision in a letter to fellow lawmakers.
“I never thought I’d be speaker. But I pledged to you that if I could be a unifying figure, then I would serve – I would go all in. After talking with so many of you, and hearing your words of encouragement, I believe we are ready to move forward as a one, united team. And I am ready and eager to be our speaker,” the congressman said. “This is just the beginning of our work. There is a long road ahead. So let’s get started.”
Republicans are scheduled to nominate a new speaker on October 28, with a full vote by the House taking place the next day.
