President Donald Trump has decided to remove Anthony Scaramucci as his White House communications director, just over a week after the former New York financier was named to the position.

“Anthony Scaramucci will be leaving his role as White House Communications Director,” Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Monday. “Mr. Scaramucci felt it was best to give Chief of Staff John Kelly a clean slate and the ability to build his own team. We wish him all the best.”

Other details were not immediately provided, but the abrupt removal followed a week of infighting at the White House, leading to Friday’s ouster of White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus. Kelly succeeded Priebus and assumed his new position on Monday morning.

Scaramucci made frequent appearances in the media since being named communications director on July 21, even though he had not yet formally assumed the position. Scaramucci’s appointment led to the resignation of Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who reportedly disagreed with the appointment.

The conflict at the White House became the focus of attention on Thursday when a journalist from The New Yorker published a story about a call he received from Scaramucci, who was outraged over leaks to journalists.

Scaramucci urged the journalist to reveal his source and threatened to fire everyone at the White House Press Office. He also accused Priebus of leaking information to the media and said he would be asked to resign.

“Reince is a fucking paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac,” Scaramucci was quoted as saying by The New Yorker. He also attacked White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, saying: “I’m not Steve Bannon, I’m not trying to suck my own cock.”

The Washington Post reported on Monday that Trump and his family did not appreciate how Scaramucci’s comments linked them to vulgarity. Kelly made clear to senior aides on Monday that everyone should be aware that their comments reflect on the president, the newspaper reported.
