U.S. President Donald Trump has named Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster to be his new National Security Advisor, replacing Michael Flynn who was fired after providing incomplete information about his contacts with Russia.
Trump announced his decision on Monday afternoon while briefly speaking in the living room of his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. He called McMaster “a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience.”
White House spokesman Sean Spicer added that Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who served as acting national security advisor after Flynn’s firing, will return to his role as Chief of Staff and Executive Secretary of the National Security Council.
The position of National Security Advisor does not require confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
