A man driving an explosives-packed motorcycle has targeted an entry control point at a large U.S. military base near the Afghan capital, causing an undisclosed number of injuries, U.S. officials said on Wednesday. Only few details were immediately released.

The incident happened at about 5:38 p.m. local time on Wednesday when an explosion occurred outside an entry control point at Bagram Airfield, which is a large U.S. military base that is located in Parwan province, just north of Kabul.

“The explosion resulted in a small number of casualties,” U.S. Forces Afghanistan said in a brief statement, which did not specify the number of victims or their conditions. It added that injured were being treated at Bagram medical facilities.

“Bagram Airfield is secure and the incident is being investigated,” the statement added.

Afghan officials said a suicide bomber on a motorcycle had targeted one of the gates at the airbase. A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Pajhwok news agency that several Afghan civilians were among those injured.
