North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has delivered an unusual address in person, condemning U.S. President Donald Trump as “mentally deranged” and vowing to respond to his “unethical” threat to “totally destroy” North Korea.
Kim explained that he had expected Trump’s prepared speech at the UN to be different from his off the cuff threats, but Kim said the U.S. leader had failed to deliver any remarks that can be seen as trying to defuse tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
“He made unprecedented rude nonsense one has never heard from any of his predecessors,” he said, calling Trump “mentally deranged” and comparing him to a frightened dog. “I’d like to advise Trump to exercise prudence in selecting words,” Kim added.
During Tuesday’s speech at the UN, Trump said the denuclearization of North Korea was the only acceptable future.
“The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea,” he said. “Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime,” Trump added.
Kim condemned Trump’s threat as “unethical” but said it had convinced him to push forward with his nuclear weapons program.
“His remarks which described the U.S. option through straightforward expression of his will have convinced me, rather than frightening or stopping me, that the path I chose is correct and that it is the one I have to follow to the last,” Kim said.
Kim went on to threaten strong countermeasures against the United States, although he provided no specific details. “I will make the man holding the prerogative of the supreme command in the U.S. pay dearly for his speech calling for totally destroying the DPRK,” he said.
The latest developments follow months of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, fueled by North Korea’s frequent missile tests and its advancing nuclear weapons program, as well as U.S. military exercises and threatening statements by President Donald Trump.
