A 19-year-old man identified as Michael Sandford has been arrested at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas after attempting to disarm a police officer while pretending to get an autograph, officials say. The Secret Service is investigating.
The incident happened on Saturday while businessman Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee, was holding a support rally inside the Mystere Theater at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
“While inside the theater, a subject, later identified as 19 year old Michael Sandford, approached a uniformed LVMPD officer who was assigned to the event,” police said in a statement. “Sandford began a conversation with the officer under the pretense that he was seeking an autograph. During the conversation, Sanford attempted to disarm the officer.”
Police officers who were assigned to the event were able to quickly take Sanford into custody, and there was no immediate word on Sanford’s motive for attempting to grab the officer’s weapon. Sandford has been handed over to the U.S. Secret Service, which has launched an investigation.
