Singer Chester Bennington, the lead vocalist of the rock band Linkin Park, has died in California of an apparent suicide, local officials say. He was 41 years old.

Bennington was found dead at about 8:56 a.m. PT on Thursday when police officers were called to a residence in Palos Verdes Estates near Los Angeles. It was not immediately known when exactly he died or who found him.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Bennington had been found dead. The entertainment news website TMZ reported that Bennington hanged himself in an apparent suicide, though authorities would not confirm that.

“The case is under investigation by the LA County Coroner’s office and any inquiries should be directed to them,” Corporal Greg Robinson of the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department said. “Due to the ongoing investigation, we are unable to provide further details at this time.”

Bennington, who struggled with drugs and alcohol for years, previously disclosed that he had in the past attempted to kill himself. Bennington was also a close friend of Chris Cornell, who killed himself in May and whose birthday would have been on Thursday.

Bennington is survived by six children from two marriages.
