A large military plane has crashed during training in southwest China, officials and witnesses say, but only few details were immediately available. It’s unclear how many people were on board.
The accident happened late on Monday afternoon when the aircraft went down in a mountainous area of Suiyang County in Guizhou Province, about 167 kilometers (104 miles) south of Chongqing, or 931 kilometers (578 miles) northwest of Hong Kong.
A brief statement from China’s Air Force said one of its planes had crashed during flight training in Guizhou Province, but there was no immediate word on the type of aircraft or how many people were on board. It said a search and rescue operation was underway.
A video shared on social media showed a large aircraft flying at a low altitude in a mountainous area. Other videos showed that the aircraft was almost completely destroyed on impact and parts of the wreckage were on fire.
