A powerful explosion has rocked the Afghan capital of Kabul, killing an unknown number of people and injuring dozens more, officials say. Only few details were immediately available.
The incident happened at about 12:45 p.m. local time on Saturday when a large explosion hit near Sadarat Square in Kabul. It happened near a former building of the Interior Ministry, as well as buildings housing an intelligence agency, the Afghan High Peace Council, and foreign embassies.
Only few details were immediately available, but the Emergency Hospital said that at least 50 victims had been taken to the medical facility. “It’s a massacre,” said Dejan Panic, the hospital’s emergency coordinator.
Witnesses reported seeing multiple bodies at the site, but the total number of victims was not immediately known. Photos from the scene damaged cars and buildings and windows had been blown out across the neighborhood.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Saturday’s attack.
