A man with a knife has attacked people at a supermarket in the city of Hamburg in northern Germany, killing at least one person and injuring others, local authorities say. A possible terror link is being investigated.

The incident happened just after 3 p.m. local time on Friday when the man – whose identity was not immediately known – entered a variety store and began stabbing people, causing multiple victims before fleeing the scene.

Hamburg police confirmed that at least one person had been killed and several other people were injured. The exact number of injured was not immediately known. The suspect – who was covered in blood – was arrested a short time later.

It happened at the TEDi store in the Barmbek area of Hamburg. Photos and videos showed a large number of emergency services, including a helicopter and heavily-armed police officers, at the scene.

The motive for the attack was not immediately known, but German media said it could be terrorism-related. A man who said he witnessed the attack said the suspect stabbed at least three people and shouted “Allahu Akbar.”
