Knife and vehicle attack near Beijing leaves 1 dead, 13 injured

At least one person has been killed and more than a dozen others have been injured in a knife and vehicle attack near the Chinese capital of Beijing, local police say. Only few details were immediately available. (more)

The incident happened at about 3 p.m. local time on Sunday when a man stabbed 5 people in Jugezhuang, a town northeast of Beijing. The suspect then got into a van and fled the scene, after which he ran over 9 people.

The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau said in a brief statement on social media that one of those struck by the vehicle had died. The 13 other victims were taken to area hospitals, where there was no immediate word on their conditions.

The suspect was able to escape and a manhunt was continuing on late Sunday evening, the statement said. It provided no information about either the identity of the suspect or a possible motive for the attack.
