A gunman has opened fire at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York City, causing multiple victims, police say. The suspect, who is reported to be a former employee, was later confirmed dead.
The incident began at around 3 p.m. ET on Friday when police were called to reports of multiple shots being fired on the 16th floor of the hospital, which is located in the Bronx. There was no immediate word on the circumstances of the shooting.
“NYPD is on scene at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital where there are reports of several people shot,” NYPD spokesman J. Peter Donald said. He provided no information about the exact number of victims or their conditions.
Police sources suggest that at least four people have been shot.
Donald later confirmed that the suspected shooter was confirmed dead, though there was no immediate word on how he died. Local media reported that the suspect is believed to be a former employee who was seen wearing a doctor’s coat and was possibly armed with a rifle.
