Joe McKnight, who previously played for the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs, has died in an apparent road rage shooting just outside New Orleans, his friends and relatives say. He was 28 years old.
The incident happened at about 2:40 p.m. on Thursday when police were called to a shooting at the intersection of Behrman Highway and Holmes Boulevard in Terrytown, a census-designated place just outside New Orleans in Jefferson Parish.
Investigators have yet to comment on the exact circumstances of the murder, but a witness told the Times-Picayune that she saw a man yelling at McKnight, who was standing in the road next to a vehicle and apparently tried to apologize before being shot multiple times.
McKnight was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not said whether the shooter was taken into custody.
Fellow players expressed their shock at the murder of McKnight, who was currently playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. “Damn RIP Joe McKnight. Killed in his own city, #504Boys4Life,” Arizona Cardinals player Tyrann Mathieu said in a tweet.
