A man has been arrested in the Dutch city of Rotterdam on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism, prosecutors say. An AK-47 assault rifle and a flag of the Islamic State group (ISIS) were found at his home.

The suspect, identified only as a 30-year-old resident of the city, was arrested on Wednesday when the Unit Special Interventions raided his home, though news of his arrest was not announced until Friday when he appeared in court.

During a search of the man’s home, investigators found an AK-47 assault rifle with two magazines of ammunition, a large canvas with a picture of the flag used by the Islamic State group, and four boxes with “extremely explosive illegal fireworks,” the Public Prosecution Service said in a statement.

The man came to the attention of police based on information obtained by the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), but specific details were not immediately released. “He is suspected of preparing a terroristic crime,” prosecutors said.

The suspect appeared before court on Friday and has been ordered detained for at least two weeks.
