A bomb has exploded on board a passenger bus in Jerusalem, injuring nearly two dozen people and causing a second bus to catch fire, Israeli officials say. It was not immediately known who was responsible for the attacks.
The incident happened late on Monday afternoon when a bus carrying dozens of people exploded near Bar’am Road and Hebron Road in Jerusalem. The blast also caused a second, empty bus nearby to catch fire.
There was initially confusion over the cause of the explosion, but Israeli police spokesman Superintendent Micky Rosenfeld later clarified that bomb disposal experts had confirmed that an explosive device went off in the back of the bus.
Contrary to initial reports, the explosion happened on board the bus carrying passengers, not the empty bus.
Photos and videos from the scene showed both buses engulfed in flames after the explosion, but most of the passengers on board the bus were able to flee before the fire spread. A total of 21 people suffered injuries, including two people who were seriously injured.
Police searched the area for possible suspects, but there was no immediate word on who may have been responsible for Monday’s attack.
