Police and other emergency services are responding to an active shooter situation along the Las Vegas Strip, where a country music festival was taking place near the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, officials and witnesses say.
The incident began on late Sunday evening at the end of a performance by country music star Jason Aldean when heavy gunfire erupted. Witnesses said hundreds of bullets were fired and the gunshots appeared to be coming from a higher altitude.
There was no immediate word on the exact number of victims, but initial reports indicate that there are dozens of victims. A spokesman for one Las Vegas hospital confirmed that at least 2 people had been killed and 24 others are injured.
One person – believed to be a shooter – was reported to have been killed inside a room at Mandalay Bay. It’s unclear if there were multiple shooters, but a police operation was ongoing on early Monday morning.
