Three police officers are seriously injured after a shootout at a convenience store in the city of Laredo in Texas, local officials say. The suspect – who was being sought in connection with a woman’s murder – was killed.

The incident happened at around 5 p.m. on Friday when officers encountered 55-year-old Antonio Gerardo Rodriguez at the Stripes convenience store at the intersection of East Hillside Road and McPherson Road, not far from the border with Mexico.

When officers approached the store, Rodriguez allegedly opened fire, shooting three Laredo police officers. One of the officers was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio where he or she was in a critical but stable condition. The other two were taken to a local hospital in serious but stable condition.

Rodriguez was taken to a hospital where he died, though it was not immediately clear whether he was shot by police or had killed himself.

Rodriguez was wanted for questioning in the murder of his girlfriend, 50-year-old Reyna Gonzalez Zamora. The woman was found dead at her apartment in Laredo earlier in the day after her landlord called police for a welfare check. The murder scene is just 1.5 mile from the Stripes convenience store.
