No matter what has happened to you and your career over the years, there is a path for you. This might be hard to understand and believe, especially if you have quit your job or gone through a layoff recently, but there is something out there for everyone. Maybe it’s a new job, a career change, or even starting your own business, there is no shortage of possibilities.

You are not the only one going through major career changes like this. For example, the tech industry over the past few months has gone through a series of layoffs, affecting thousands of employees. No matter how much work they put in, they were let go and left to find something new. It might be hard when it’s happening, but as they say “when one door closes, another one opens” and that’s something to be mindful of. Maybe it’s time to take this career shift as a sign to take a leap of faith and start your own business. If you believe in yourself and your capabilities, you can be successful.

“No matter what happened in your previous career, you are taking the first steps to something new, and new can be great. Even though it might feel like you are starting over completely, you actually aren’t. All of the communication, collaboration, organizational or managerial skills have led you to this moment. Make sure to use everything you have learned about being a hard worker to start on this new path,” says Alan Siege, CEO and host of The Pitch Show.

One of the most common misconceptions about starting a small business is that you need to have a background in the business industry itself. That definitely helps, but it’s not a requirement. The most important thing about taking on this challenge, is that you have to be willing to learn new things and grow from your mistakes. Building a business front he ground up is no easy feat, and you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to make it successful. Even if you do have a background in business, there is always room for growth. Being an entrepreneur means being persistent with your goals, and navigating whatever obstacle gets thrown your way.

Your previous experience and skills are not a waste either. Maybe you were a doctor, accountant, writer or even in the food industry, you have valuable skills and expertise that can be applied everywhere. Staying organized and having a hard work ethic are some necessary qualities to have as an entrepreneur, and you don’t need a business background to have those skills. Being a leader applies to everything in life, and having a mindset like this can help you shine bright as you tackle this new project.

“Most people that start their own business, don’t necessarily have a background in business. Just because you have had different careers and experiences your whole life, does not mean you can’t do this. In fact, that very history and experience will likely help you reach your business goals. And don’t forget the importance of passion. It is not a substitute for a thorough analysis of your market. Yet, passion can keep you above water when everything seems to be crashing around you,” Siege says.

Just because you are starting a new business, does not mean you are starting over completely. Your previous experience as a worker is the only toolbox you really need to be successful. Being an entrepreneur means going with the flow, and it’s important to rely on yourself as an intellectual and a hard worker, because it will get you far.

Remember your passion and why you decided to take this leap of faith. Maybe it was a layoff that inspired you to try something new, but it’s inspiration nonetheless. You have all the skills you need to be successful. Stay organized, persistent, and ready to grow, and success will be on the horizon.
