Isabel Celis, the 6-year-old Arizona girl who disappeared from her home in Tucson nearly five years ago, has been found dead in a remote location, local officials announced on Friday. No arrests have been made so far.
The remains were found earlier in March in a “remote area” in Pima County, but Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus declined to provide specific details about the discovery. A portion of the remains were sent to a lab in Virginia where DNA analysis confirmed that the remains are those of Isabel.
“Although this confirmation may bring some degree of closure, of course it also ends the hope of bringing Isabel home safely to her family,” Chief Magnus said. “The Tucson Police Department will continue to actively pursue those responsible for any kind of involvement in Isabel’s death and disappearance.”
Chief Magnus declined to comment on the possible cause and time of Isabel’s death, whether the remains were intact, or what led investigators to the site of the remains. Magnus also declined to say when and where the remains were found.
Isabel was reported missing from her home on April 21, 2012. Her family told officers that they had last seen Isabel at 11 p.m. on the previous night, when she was preparing to go to bed. Isabel was discovered missing at 8 a.m. when a family member went into her room to wake her up for planned activities.
Despite a massive search and nationwide news coverage, Isabel remained missing and a suspect was never found.
