Windows 10 isn’t quite ready for prime time, though Microsoft has not yet confirmed rumours that the new OS will be ready in July in time for the traditionally popular back to school PC buying season.
If you want to sample the unfinished version of Windows 10 now on a PC, you can do so via the Windows Insider program, and apparently more than 3.7 million people have already done so, says Microsoft.
Windows 10 not yet ready for the masses
However, there’s one select group of people who are unable to try Windows 10 – the ones that have bought Microsoft’s new Surface 3 tablet, which went on sale last week.
Answering questions about how to update the new tablet on the company’s Surface forum, a support person warned:
Please do NOT try to install Windows 10 on the new Surface 3. There are no drivers in the Preview Build because Intel has not yet provided drivers. There are no drivers for the Intel x5/x7 Atom processors. This warning does not apply to the new high-end Surface Pro 3 tablet, which can handle Windows 10 just fine, the Microsoft support person says says.
This explains one mystery. At the company’s Build developer’s conference held last month in San Francisco, the Redmond-based company gave attendees a brand new HP Spectra 365. Most attendees, Microsoft developers, are already part of the Windows Insider program and immediately upgraded that tablet to Windows 10 Preview. But those in attendance were stumped as to why Microsoft didn’t give away one of their new Surface 3 tablets, and now we know why…
