Debbie Reynolds, who rose to fame with the 1952 film “Singin’ in the Rain” and went on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, has died in Los Angeles, just a day after the death of her daughter, actress Carrie Fisher.
Reynolds was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles just after 1 p.m. PT on Wednesday after she suffered breathing problems and possible signs of a stroke. It happened as she was discussing plans for Carrie’s funeral at the Beverly Hills home of her son Todd Fisher.
A fire department spokeswoman initially described Reynolds’ condition as “fair to serious”, but Todd confirmed later on Wednesday afternoon that his mother had passed away. “She wanted to be with Carrie,” he told Variety.
Other details about her cause of death were not immediately available, but it comes just a day after her daughter Carrie – who was well known for her role as Princess Leia on “Star Wars” – died as a result of a heart attack. She was 60 years old.
Reynolds rose to fame with her leading role in the 1952 musical comedy “Singin’ in the Rain” and went on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars of the 50s and 60s. She further achieved success as a singer after her cover of “Tammy” rose to the top of the music charts in 1957.
Reynolds received multiple Golden Globe nominations and was nominated for an Oscar in 1965 for her role in “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.” She was also awarded an honorary Oscar just last year and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
