At least 11 people were killed in South Sudan’s capital when a gunman opened fire at people who were watching a football match on television. The suspect, who had reportedly been mocked when his team lost, is still at large.
The incident happened at about 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday when a large group of people were watching an English Premier League match in the Juba suburb of Gure. Details about the deadly shooting were not known until Monday.
Witnesses told the Sudan Tribune that an unidentified man opened fire as about 40 people were watching the football match.
“It was a butchery. It looked like a battlefield. There was blood everywhere. There were bodies everywhere,” a 23-year-old survivor told the newspaper. “I still don’t believe I survived it because I still see how the gunman carried out his carnage and I really don’t know how I escaped this massacre.”
Witnesses said the shooting went on for about 10 minutes. “We heard so many gunshots. The gunman was very calm and very determined. He was shooting at people like as if they were birds,” another survivor told the Sudan Tribune.
The gunman managed to escape the scene and operations were continuing on Monday to find him. There was no immediate word from authorities about a possible motive, but several witnesses claimed that the gunman became upset after his team lost the match and other people mocked him.
