Dorothy Mengering, the mother of late-night talk show host David Letterman and who became known to Late Night and Late Show viewers when she was introduced as “Dave’s Mom,” has died. She was 95 years old.
Dorothy passed away on Tuesday but other details – such as the cause and place of death – were not immediately available. Her death was reported by Ron Brackett, a Tampa Bay Times employee who spoke with Dorothy’s daughter.
The news comes just 1 day before Letterman turns 70.
Dorothy initially appeared on her son’s shows via telephone, but she was finally introduced on camera on February 25, 1986, when she appeared on the “Parents’ Night” broadcast of Late Night with David Letterman.
Dorothy, who was usually referred to as “Dave’s Mom” or “Dave’s Mom Dorothy,” went on to make a number of other appearances on her son’s shows, including in 1994, 1998, and 2002 to appear as a commentator for the Olympic Games.
