Convicted murderer and cult leader Charles Manson, who is serving a life sentence for the murders of nine people, is “seriously ill” and has been taken from his California prison and transferred to a hospital in the region.

A source familiar with the situation told the Los Angeles Times that Manson is “seriously ill” and was transfered from the California State Prison in Corcoran to a regional hospital. The source provided no other information about Manson’s condition.

Entertainment news website TMZ.com, which first broke the story about Manson’s hospitalization, said the notorious criminal had been taken to a hospital in Bakersfield, which is about 56 miles (90 kilometers) southeast of Corcoran.

Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), declined to comment on the reports. “Federal and state medical privacy laws preclude CDCR from commenting on protected health information for any inmate in our custody,” she said.

Manson, who is 82, was convicted in 1971 for his involvement in the 1969 murders of nine people, including actress Sharon Tate. The murders were carried out by his followers, the so-called “Manson Family”, which consisted of mostly runaways and outcasts.

Manson was initially sentenced to death but his conviction was reduced to life in prison when California’s Supreme Court abolished the death penalty in the early 1970s. He became eligible for parole after just 7 years and his requests have been repeatedly denied. His next parole hearing is set for 2027.
