A couple from California that survived the mass shooting at a music festival in Las Vegas, in which nearly 60 people died, were killed in a car accident just two weeks later, local authorities said on Monday.
The couple – 52-year-old Dennis Carver and 53-year-old Lorraine Carver – were attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival on October 1 when a man opened fire from a nearby hotel, killing 58 people and injuring nearly 550 others in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
The couple escaped unhurt, but Lorraine described their experience on Facebook just days later. “I have the most amazing husband. Not only did he shield my body during the shooting in Las Vegas and guide me to safety but then he sends me flowers today. I am blessed,” she wrote, along with a photo of roses.
But two weeks later, at about 10:50 p.m. on October 16, the couple was driving towards their home in Murrieta in Riverside County. Just a few hundred yards (meters) from their residence, their vehicle crashed into a metal speaker intercom and two brick pillars, causing a fire that quickly engulfed the car.
It took more than an hour before the fire was extinguished, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. Both Dennis and Lorraine were killed.
The couple’s oldest daughter, 20-year-old Brooke, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that their parents were ‘more in love than ever’ after they survived the shooting in Las Vegas. “They were so happy. The last two weeks of their lives were really just spent living in the moment,” she said.
Dennis and Lorraine had been together for 22 years, during which they had two daughters. “We’ve found some peace in knowing that our parents just loved each other so much that they had to go at the same time. They couldn’t live without each other,” 14-year-old Madison told the newspaper.
