Shots were fired outside the headquarters of the National Security Agency (NSA) after a vehicle tried to enter the spy agency’s secure campus in Maryland, officials say. Three people, including an officer, were injured.

The incident happened at about 7:15 a.m. ET on Wednesday when a black SUV attempted to enter the NSA’s campus in Fort Meade without authorization. This prompted law enforcement officers to open fire at the vehicle.

Three people were treated for non-life threatening injuries as a result of the incident, but none of them were hit by gunfire, local officials said. Those injured include a law enforcement officer who suffered a leg injury and a suspect who had been tazed.

Details about what happened remained unclear on Wednesday afternoon, but the suspect was taken into custody. Video from the scene showed an SUV with bullet holes in its windshield had struck a concrete barrier on the wrong side of the road.

Federal law enforcement, including agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), are investigating what happened, but there was no indication of a link to terrorism. President Donald Trump was briefed on the incident shortly after it happened, according to the White House.

“The situation is under control and there is no ongoing security or safety threat,” the NSA said in a brief statement. “Weapons were discharged in the course of the incident, which remains under investigation at this time. .. The FBI is presently leading the investigation.”

Highway 32 was closed in both directions but later reopened, according to Fort Meade officials.
