One person has been killed and three others are injured after a gunman opened fire in a neighborhood in southeast Dallas, local officials say. The suspect – a local resident – was later found dead inside a home.

The incident began at 11:31 a.m. on Monday when someone was reported to have been shot in the 3200 block of Reynolds Avenue, near Dolphin Road and Interstate 30. The initial call erroneously suggested that the gunshot could have been self-inflicted.

A Dallas Fire Rescue EMT Unit was the first to arrive on the scene, after which paramedics immediately began treating the victim. But as they were tending to the victim, a man approached the area and opened fire, striking one of the paramedics.

As police arrived at the scene, they too came under fire, according to the Dallas Police Association, which said officers were “pinned down” by gunfire. One Dallas Police Officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries, though it was not immediately clear what caused his or her injuries.

The suspect – a black male who was armed with a rifle – was able to flee the scene but was later tracked to a residence in the area. A police robot entered the home after several hours and located the bodies of two people, including the suspected shooter.

Dallas Interim Police Chief David Pughes said the shooting appears to have followed a “simple dispute” between neighbors. Specific details about the nature of the dispute were not immediately released and the investigation is ongoing.

The paramedic who was shot underwent surgery at a local hospital, after which he was admitted to the ICU in critical but stable condition. The civilian who was shot first was also in the ICU in a critical condition.
