Convicted murderer and cult leader Charles Manson, who is serving a life sentence for the murders of nine people, has been taken to a California hospital where his condition is deteriorating, according to news reports.
Lt. Bill Smallwood of the Kern County Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday that Manson is being treated at a hospital in Bakersfield, about 56 miles (90 kilometers) southeast of the California State Prison in Corcoran. There was no official word on the severity of his illness.
Entertainment news website TMZ, which first reported the news, said Manson was rushed to hospital on Sunday and has since undergone a number of treatments. Sources told the website that his health is steadily deteriorating and the 83-year-old inmate was described as looking ashen.
“It’s not going to get any better for him .. It’s just a matter of time,” one of the sources told TMZ.
Other details about Manson’s condition were not immediately known. The notorious criminal was also taken to hospital in early January, when he was said to be “seriously ill.” It was reported at the time that Manson had suffered severe intestinal bleeding but was too weak to undergo surgery.
Manson was convicted in 1971 for his involvement in the 1969 murders of nine people, including actress Sharon Tate. The murders were carried out by his followers – the so-called “Manson Family” – which consisted of mostly runaways and outcasts.
Manson was initially sentenced to death but it was reduced to life in prison when California’s Supreme Court abolished the death penalty in the early 1970s. He became eligible for parole after just 7 years but his requests have been repeatedly denied. His next parole hearing has been set for April 2027.
