Actress Carrie Fisher, who is best known for her role as Princess Leia on “Star Wars”, has suffered a massive heart attack on a flight from England and has been rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles, relatives say.
Fisher, who is 60, was flying on a United flight from London when she went into full cardiac arrest. People on board the plane performed CPR on the actress and, once the plane landed in Los Angeles just after noon, she was rushed to UCLA Medical Center.
“Don’t know how else to process this but Carrie Fisher stopped breathing on the flight home. Hope she’s gonna be OK,” actress Anna Akana said on Twitter. “So many thanks to the United flight crew who jumped into action, and the awesome doctor and nurse passengers who helped.”
Brad Gage, who was also on board the flight, said he was in complete shock. “[Akana] and I sat in front of Carrie Fisher on our flight from London and she was just taken off the plane by EMTs. I don’t know what happened. Not really sure what to do right now but I hope she is ok. I hope she is ok,” he said.
Emergency officials initially said Fisher was in a critical condition, but her brother Todd Fisher later told the Associated Press that the actress was “out of emergency” and had been stabilized. He would not provide any other details, but sources told TMZ that Fisher had been put on a ventilator.
Witnesses and reports indicated that CPR had to be performed for at least 10 to 15 minutes before a pulse was detected.
Fisher is well known for her role as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy, as well as the 2015 movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Additionally, she is also a successful writer and has published a number of books, including the 1987 book Postcards from the Edge.
